Validity of diplomatic or official passports issued overseas is now regulated

On September 25, 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs promulgates the Circular No. 04/2020/TT-BNG providing guidance on the issuance, renewal or revocation of diplomatic or official passports, and diplomatic notes requesting visas from foreign countries.

According to this Circular, the validity of diplomatic or official passports issued or renewed in foreign countries under Article 13 of the 2019 Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese Citizens will be subject to the following regulations:  

- Passports issued in case of any damage or loss occurring during short-term business travels in foreign countries are valid for 1 year.

- Passports issued in the following cases are valid for a minimum of 1 year and not longer than the validity of the preexisting ones:

+ Their pages run out or they are expected to be renewed.  

+ Passports are issued to members of Vietnam’s overseas representative missions or Vietnam’s resident media agencies in foreign countries whose posts are changed (current regulations prescribe the validity of passports of this kind is not longer than the remaining validity of old ones).

- New passports or renewal passports issued to the following persons are valid for a minimum of 1 year and not longer than the validity of passports of persons who they accompany or visit:

Spouses or children under 18 years of age living abroad who visit or accompany, or children newly born abroad to, members of members of Vietnam’s overseas representative missions or Vietnam’s resident media agencies in foreign countries.

Circular No. 04/2020/TT-BNG is entering into force on November 10, 2020.
